Q: What is the best way to make a bird garden in my yard?
Eden Wallace, Darlington, SC

A: When planning your garden, you should keep in mind that there are four components of habitat: food, water, shelter, and a place to raise young. Providing all of these components will help you to create a bird-friendly habitat. When choosing plants, try to select a variety of native plants to offer year-round food in the form of seeds, berries, nuts, and nectar. Evergreen trees and shrubs make excellent cover throughout the year. I recommend you check out the National Wildlife Federation's website. They have lots of great information and can also direct you to other sources such as The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center which has lists of native plants by region. Good luck with your project and feel free to send pictures of your backyard habitat.
