Eastern Flowering Dogwood

Cornus florida

Often referred to as one of the most beautiful flowering trees in the Carolinas, the Eastern Flowering Dogwood produces white flowers in early Spring, red fruit, and scarlet foliage in the Fall. It is for these reasons that it is planted for ornamental purposes and the fruit is a source of food for birds and other wildlife. The Native Americans used the aromatic bark to make a remedy for malaria and extracted red dye from the roots.
