Mockernut Hickory
Carya tomentosa
In the Walnut family, this straight-growing hickory is common in the eastern half of the US. The wood of the Mockernut Hickory has been valued for its strength for furniture and is also used for smoking meat. The term "mockernut" comes from the large thick-shelled fruit with very small kernels of meat inside. Many birds and other animals eat or store the nuts for winter.
